The Accrington Pals – The LADS Theatre Co

November 19th @ 7:45 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 7:45pm, repeating until 20th November 2018

Accrington PalsThe Accrington Pals, by Peter Whelan
In answer to the ‘Your Country Needs You’ campaign, a thousand young men left the Lancashire town of Accrington to fight in the First World War. Friends, workmates and brothers signed up together. It took just ten days to raise the ‘Accrington Pals’ volunteer battalion; in ten minutes, most of them were slaughtered at the Somme.
Peter Whelan’s play, written in 1981, follows five men and five women through these events. It explores at close quarters the effects of the Great War on ordinary people. Michael Billington described it as ‘one of the best plays ever about the First World War’. Powerful and searingly honest, it explores the best and the worst of human nature.
‘The Accrington Pals’ depicts the fate that strikes a single community, but the true tragedy is that it was a pattern repeated in almost every town and village. Accrington’s history is our history, and it is as important now as it has ever been.
